How to handle an evil mother in law?

My MIL has been cold and uncaring from the first time I met her. She treats my husband horribly always putting him down and screaming at him. She once even told him she should have never had him, yet my husband keeps running back to her seeking some type of approval, that he will never get. I just found out that for the past five years she has been bad mouthing us to my brother in law, who last week sent us an email telling us that he hates us and that he doesn't want anything to do with us. He put us down and told us we have too many nice things, and I told him it's none of his business because it's our life and not his. I afterwards called my in laws and told them that they are the most evil and malicious people I have ever met. I am now not speaking to them and neither to my brother in law. I hate the fact that I married into a family of totally cold snobs. Is it bad if it just stays this way of not talking? I am completely done with these people and very hurt. Any advice on how to view this situation from a more positive angle and make me feel better?
