How to burn CD/DVD that can be played in the CD/DVD player?

I have genuine Win 7. I can convert any file to the desired format AVI / WMV . I have CD/DVD writer in my DELL PC. I can burn the file to the CD/DVD but only audio part is recorded but can not view video in my CD/DVD player. What to do ?
